BELLA is our 2006 Cruiser 460 Express and 3 1/2 years ago when we decided to do the Loop, we knew that she was the vessel that we would be taking.  This is our 12th summer boating with her.  She is 46' long and her beam is 14'.  She has two state rooms and two heads and a nice size galley and salon.  Hopefully she is big enough for when Tom and I need some alone time from each other this next year ;)
People always ask us why we named her BELLA.  She is actually BELLA II and she and BELLA I, got their names from Tom's mom, Ella, who passed away 16 years ago.  In 2000, we decided to buy a boat.  We'd never even had a row boat and we decided to get a "cabin on the water" and purchased a 40' Gibson house boat.  Yup, go big or go home.   After taking possession, the boys in my family named our vessel, Daytripper, of course after the Beatles.  Tom's mother wasn't in agreement with our new houseboat's moniker and suggested we name her Bella.  And she suggested/encouraged this several times.......
After she passed away we purchased a used 2001 Cruisers 3870 Express that had already been named.  We knew that we needed to buy this boat when we looked at it because not only did we like it, we loved her name......BELLA.  We knew it was a sign from Ella.  We purchased BELLA 1 and enjoyed her for four years before we decided to get another Cruisers and when we did, there was no doubt her name would be BELLA.

What is the Great Loop?

The Great Loop is a circumnavigation of the eastern U.S., and part of Canada.  The route includes the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway, the New York State Canals, the Canadian Canals, the Great Lakes, the inland rivers, and the Gulf of Mexico. "Loopers" take on this adventure of a lifetime aboard their own boat.
The Great Loop is a minimum of 5,250, but depending on which route choice and which side trips you do, it can be extended to include thousands more miles.  Most Loopers report their Great Loop trip to be in the 6,000 mile range.
The Great Loop has been done in as little as two months and in as much as 12 years.  Traditionally, Loopers have spent about a year on the route.  After all, it is a seasonal trip.  You’ll want to be on the northern part of the Loop during the warm summer months, the inland rivers in the fall, spend the winter in Florida, and the spring following the warm weather up the eastern portion of the route.
The U.S. and Canada are usually part of the Great Loop, although one route option keeps you within the U.S. borders.  Some Loopers do a side trip to the Bahamas as well.
Depending on route choices, you will go through at least 15 U.S. states and Canadian provinces, which may include:
  • Florida
  • Georgia
  • South Carolina
  • North Carolina
  • Virginia
  • Maryland
  • Delaware
  • New Jersey
  • New York
  • Vermont
  • Quebec
  • Ontario
  • Michigan
  • Wisconsin
  • Illinois
  • Missouri
  • Kentucky
  • Tennessee
  • Mississippi
  • Alabama
You can start the Great Loop anywhere on the route. The place you intend to start will dictate the time of year that you begin your adventure.  For example, if you're starting from Chicago, you would begin in the fall to reach Florida before winter.  You would not be able to start from Chicago in February.
Although the Great Loop has been done in both directions, it’s usually done counter-clockwise so that you are going with the current, not against it, on the inland rivers.

We plan to leave Wabasha, MN on about Sept. 6, traveling down the Mississippi, Ohio and Tennessee-Tombigbee rivers, reaching Mobile, Alabama about November 1.  We are opting to take a side-trip to Nashville via the Cumberland and Joe Wheeler State Park via the Tennessee.  From Mobile, Alabama we start the ICW around the Gold Coast before crossing the gulf at Carrabelle to Tarpon Springs.  We’ll spend a month in Fort Myers before working our way down to Marathon, Keys for another month.  In spring we will follow the warm weather north to New York City, arriving in June.  Taking the Hudson River through NYC brings us to the Champlain Canal where we’ll take the alternate route north through Lake Champlain to Montreal and Ottawa.  The Trent-Severn waterway through Ontario, Canada brings us to Georgian Bay where we’ll take the North Channel and cut through Lake Huron to the Straits of Mackinac and Lake Michigan. We’ll cross Lake Michigan and sail south to Chicago, then down the Illinois River until we connect again with the Mississippi River.  We’ll turn our boat north and go back up the Mississippi to our home Port of Wabasha, MN, arriving in the Fall of 2019.

Dear family and friends, welcome to our Great Loop blog - Ticket to Ride.  Those of you who know us probably figured that the blog would have something to do the the Beatles.  You were right!  We are hoping our blog will keep you in the "loop" on our boating adventure.  We anticipate casting off our lines September 6, 2018 and returning to our home port Parkside in Wabasha, MN  September of 2019.   We look forward to sharing our time on BELLA with you all.
